Enjoy the Creative Process

Allowing yourself to enjoy the process of creating is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. I am the first to admit that this concept is sometimes difficult to follow.

When I have my eye on the result and it’s not being achieved as fast as I want, I get frustrated. In times like these, I must take a step back and realize that everything happens when it’s supposed to, and that fretting over it is not making it happen faster and is certainly not good for my well-being.

By recognizing my frustrations, I am taking the first step in working through my feelings. It’s here that I start to consider that getting from A to B is a process, and the “to” in between is what I make of it.

I can choose to complain about the challenges, or I can embrace them with the understanding that everything I’m working toward is a process, a beautiful journey unfolding.

Here are three gentle reminders to ensure you’re making the most of your creative time:

  • Control what you can. We can’t control outside influences that may throw a wrench into our plans, but we can control how we respond. We may choose to find a workaround or create something new while we wait for the storm to pass.
  • Stay in the moment and be mindful of what you are experiencing. Amazing opportunities and ideas can come out of the process, but if we’re too focused on the outcome, we may not see them.
  • Let go of expectations. It’s a fact of life that things don’t often turn out like we expect. That’s okay because trusting the journey and welcoming the detours can lead to wonderful surprises.

Remember that creative endeavors take discipline, drive, and patience. And while you are in the midst of creating something beautiful, I encourage you to focus on the joy that creating brings you.
